Pursue truth...

“But Dad, I can explain.”  One of my children always has an explanation for offenses committed or falsehoods spoken.  He is the master at “explaining” why he chose to twist the truth, commit the offense, or disobey.  His explanations can be quite convincing and his arguments can be very thought provoking.  Boy, are we in trouble…he is only 7!

Life lesson:  Truth Matters
When we pursue the truth, we can find it.  We should treasure the truth and hold it in high regard.   Our hearts are hardened and darkened when we reject truth or refuse to seek it.  When someone spreads rumors about me, without coming to me to ask for the truth, I know it is an attack of the enemy.  Consider the words of Jesus in John 8:43-46, “Why can't you understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to do so!  For you are the children of your father the Devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.  So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don't believe me!”  Jesus says those who hate truth are children of Satan.  Those who refuse to seek the truth, those who spread lies and rumors or twist the truth are imitators of the evil one.

I am so convicted by how important it is to be a truth speaker, and truth seeker.  When we truly love Christ, we treasure truth.  So often we are like my 7 year old son, and we have excuses for every falsehood or half truth we speak.  We feel free to speak evil of others, and we do not pursue truth.  But God’s word tells us when we refuse to seek truth, we are rejecting the glory of God and we become imitators of the evil one.  Truth matters.  We are working to teach our children to love truth, and it has been a great challenge for us to work hard to practice what we are teaching.

Truth lessons:

1.  Weigh your words and deeds carefully.  Ask God to control your thoughts and words.  Ask Him to show you truth in your inner parts.  (Psalms 51:6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.)

2.  Guard your reputation.  Speak truth and refuse to sow discord by spreading rumors.  You don’t want to be identified with the character of the Devil.

3.  Love truth.  If you are really concerned, go to the person being spoken against.   When you love truth, you will seek it.   Refuse to take part in accusations or attacks.  They are the enemies plan to make you like him.

I am so challenged to make every effort to love truth, to pursue truth, and to be a truth speaker, because truth matters.
