Buckle Up!

I took my thirteen year old to the coffee shop in the bookstore tonight for some much needed connecting time.  Before we left the car we began to talk, and we sat in the parking space for a while.  We witnessed a very strange thing we both admitted we had never seen before.  We watched as a nice little family with a mom, dad, and two young boys got into their car.  The dad came around to the passenger’s side and opened the door for his wife.  After she was seated, he reached over and buckled her seatbelt around her.  Hannah and I thought that was very strange.  We began to guess all the reasons he might have fastened her seatbelt.  Maybe her finger was broken.  Maybe her shoulder was hurt.   Maybe she was afraid of the click.  Maybe, just maybe, he buckles her seatbelt every time they get into the car because he wants to make certain she is protected.

Life lesson:  We protect what is valuable

Marriages need a lot of protection.  The enemy attacks and seeks to destroy all that is good, pure, and Holy.  The sad fact is:  most marriages fail.  I Peter 5:8 warns, “Be careful!  Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy.  He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.”  Since marriage, God’s first ordained institution, is used as a beautiful metaphor to help us understand the intimate relationship God wants to have with us, it is understandable that Satan wants to devour our marriages and any Godly ideas of intimacy.

As Hannah and I purchased our drinks, we chose two seats away from the crowd so we could sit and talk.  After a few minutes, Hannah directed my attention to the section of books just over the half wall where we were seated.  The sign above the magazines said, “Men’s Interest.”  I was shocked to realize every single magazine had a scantily clad, well-endowed woman on the cover.  Hannah said, “Mom, I have seen about five men come and look through those magazines.”  I never realized I had allowed my thirteen year old daughter to be exposed to such filth.  Then, I thought about the young couple with the husband buckling his wife’s seat belt.  I wanted to stand in front of the “Men’s Interest” section of the bookstore spreading my arms out wide like a seat belt.  I wanted to shout, “Don’t be interested in this.  It won’t satisfy you.  This is not real!”  We have an enemy.  The pornography industry in the United States alone has a higher yearly revenue than the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball COMBINED!  What are “Men’s Interests?” Philippians 4:8 says, “Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right.  Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”  But, the “Men’s Interest” section is a very busy section of the bookstore.  The pornography industry is very profitable in our country.  We must protect our marriages from the enemy who prowls around looking for an open door to enter and to destroy our marriages.  It takes courage and it takes selfless care to fasten the safety belt around those we love, but we must protect what is valuable.  For great ideas to safeguard your marriage, visit
